Starting with YOASOBI's 'Idol,' then Aimer, Kenshi Yonezu, etc., the market share during that period when people were making a huge fuss online and in communities, saying things like 'If you don't know J-pop, you're a boomer' and so on."

    1. It's thanks to J-drama that J-idols like Arashi and Kat-tun were known. This was when I knew the most about J-pop back then

    2. I still listen to J-pop a lot nowadays, I think for people who have listened to it in the past will keep listening to it. But it'll never become mainstream

    3. It's always been an underground genre, but I don't think it's mainstream. I've never even considered it a "genre"

    4. I used to listen to Japanese songs from the 90s or anime music, but I definitely wouldn't call it a "genre"

    5. I'm the only one in my class who listens to J-pop

    6. It's just not popular with the general public, meanwhile popular singers always get influenced by it

    7. I don't think J-pop was ever 'popular'. Ballad remakes are the best

    8. It'll always be an underground genre

    9. Since when did J-pop hit its 'peak'?

    10. J-pop will forever be underground, the only J-pop I'll listen to would be BoA's Japanese songs

  • I wonder what would happen if they marketed jpop more globally. I think they do a poor job marketing and only recently has it been easier to access groups. I guess with anime becoming more popular it most likely resulted in increase consumption globally.

    peak was in 2023?

    hard to believe that honestly

I won't be surprised if peak of j-pop was in early 2000's or even earlier

As crazy as that sounds it makes sense. Japan doesn't really market their music globally. Unsure if it was similar in Korea, but I remember in the 2000s it was very hard to discover groups and you had to use other means to listen to groups.

That would be my thought too. As a millennial, when I speak to Korean friends the same age as me we have a little bit of shared knowledge about bands from that time, X-Japan, L'arc-en-ciel, etc. It's usually tied up with anime (eg. Driver's High being the intro song for GTO).

I do hear that Japanese stuff is growing in popularity again with the young Gen Z, again led by anime at its core, but Jpop is so incredibly niche in South Korea it seems odd to ever declare a "peak".

Here's a video I watched recently about J-culture in Korea, but it doesn't really mention Jpop as being a big factor.
