Although BlackPink and now Stray Kids have larer tours, and Seventeen , txt and Enhypen not far behind, they won't have larger concerts in Korea

  • The auto company Mercedes Benz used to be called Daimler Benz in countries not named USA until 2022, but since Mercedes is better known in USA, its name was changed to Mercedes Benz in 2022.

Benz is the name of its founder Karl Benz. However not too many people know where the name Mercedes came from. Some people think Mercedes is a wife, a daughter or a lover of Karl Benz.

However the name Mercedes actually had nothing to do with Benz. Gottlieb Daimler founded an auto company in Germany during 1890s but he died in 1900.

After that an investor named Emil Jellinek bought a stake of the company and named a model of the company's cars after his daughter Mercedes. To promote it he changed his name to Emil Jellinek-Mercedes. Little is known about what happened to the actual Mercedes.

The company's name remained Daimler, which was merged with the Karl Benz company in 1920s, but since the Daimler side had bigger stakes it became the Daimler-Benz company, although after world war 2 German sounding names did not sound too cool in USA so it marketed its brand using the long-dead Mercedes name, which eventually did become the name of the company since it sold the most cars in USA.

What happened more than 100 years ago eventually did change the fortune of a company and also its name.

I have written extensively about the lack of serviceable concert venues in Korea.

Among acts debuting after 2000, only three acts had full concerts in Korea's Olympic Stadium, two Kpop acts and one nonKpop act.

The concerts of JYJ were one day events, and the concerts of Psy and the NCTs were half full. Only three acts did full concerts at there.

Add Seventeen to the list. It did have a 2 full day concerts\ in the soccer stadium, mostly to accommodate its Chinese fans since there are few Korean carats.

In the old days, French Kings had to be coronated at Reims. Henry VI of Lancaster became Henri II, the King of France after being coronated at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, but for reasons lost to us nobody thought about coronating him at Reims.

When Jeanne D'Arc raised her forces, she suggested the former Dauphin of France, Charles, now no more than a bandit, to take Reims and got coronated there. Charles followed her advice and proclaimed himself as King Charles VII, and gained legitimacy over King Henri II, who was not crowned at Reims and was declared illegitimate.

To be accepted fully by the Koreans to become the reading act of Korean pop, 2 days full concerts at the Olympic Stadium, or at least the Soccer Stadium, is necessary.

Thanks to the antics of Lim Youngwoong, the soccer stadium became unusuable and the Olympic Stadium, following a renovation which ends in 2026 in a failed bid to launch the Olympics at Seoul in 2032, it will be used as a baseball venue. I have said many times that the Koreans think their bush league soccer and baseball teams are more important than internationally important KPop.

As a result, the names of KPop acts EXO and BTS, and the nonKpopper whose name I won't mention here, having had full 2 day concerts at the Olympic Stadium, got enshrined in Korean psyche forever.

Although Seventeen did have a 2 day soccer stadium concert and is considered as a leader of KPop, the other acts won't have the chance to do so in Seoul (I do not count the bullshit Goyang 'stadium' to be no more relevant than the half size BMO stadium) so they will not really be accepted as the leaders of KPop by Koreans.

It is unfortunate that this honor was granted to the nonKPopper, who has permanently secured a place in the Korean shrine, although she is raplidly becoming a has been now.
