I don't know that this commenter was thinking, because "Cheeky Icy Thang" was indeed the title track from Metamorphic.

[enter-talk] I kinda feel bad for STAYC

WJSN is questionable I'd say. In the Third Generation, there was also I.O.I, and you could make a case that even Dreamcatcher and Momoland were above them.
wasn't WJSN bigger than Dreamcatcher in Korea? Momoland run was too short to say they were a top group of the gen. I stayed away from special groups like I.O.I and iz*one because very short lived.
The point still stands that it's usually 2-3 groups from a non-big 4 company that maintains their place on top.Unfortunately, too many factors in why Stayc was unable to maintain that spot, but they had it for that moment.

I agree that WJSN was more popular than Dreamcatcher domestically. However, Dreamcatcher is just so far above WJSN outside of Korea. In fact, they've toured more than any other Third Generation girl group other than Twice and Blackpink. On the other hand, WJSN has only toured in Japan, for a mere three shows. Dreamcatcher also boasts higher physical sales.
In Momoland's case, I have to give the group credit for having one of the most iconic songs of their generation. In fact, even "Baam" out-charted any of WJSN's releases (based on the Gaon Digital Chart).
But all that being said, I do concur that your overall point still stands.

This reminds me of:
It turns out that you're right. The two matched each other quite closely, and STAYC was actually ahead for much of the time. But then "Supernova" happened...

This reminds me of:
I always said there should be broken heart reaction for things like this

Success is needed to reach 'release' to more of the listeners.
If success is not needed, why do 'musical acts' even bother with commercial releases and promotions, they could as well release on YT/Soundcloud without any copyright protection.
Yes, it is sad that people limit their 'choices' to only that is extremely popular, it is lazy of them to just bandwagon on.
Nevertheless, that is the reality of the society/markets, most will just mindlessly conform to the popular - be it in politics, religion, products or culture.

I'm talking about obsessing with other people's success. You get nothing from there, A group sells 5M or 5K, what is the difference to you? what changes in your life? Nothing.
