  • SM Entertainment’s One Production General Directors discuss aespa’s 5th Mini Album, “Whiplash.”

The slogan for this mini album is “I with subjectivity am a ‘Game Changer’ who opens a new world.”

CHOI SUNGWOO: We had a lot of concerns selecting the title track for this album, but we ultimately decided to show aespa’s more developed and advanced musical color with ‘Whiplash’. Although it is not a popular genre like ‘Supernova’ and may be a song that people either like or dislike, it would be good to see the song as a challenge to present the EDM base with aespa’s own unique color that has not been done before.

JO WOOCHEOL: The first impressions that the One Production staff had after hearing the song ‘Whiplash’ were all the same. We were confident that it was a good song and that it had a distinct color, and in order to express it clearly, we tried to remove as many unnecessary elements as possible. I think you will be able to feel aespa’s unique ‘taste of iron’ with the restrained performance and visuals that contrast with the maximal visuals of their previous work.

The song ‘Whiplash’ conjures up the concept of a DJ dominating the stage and controlling the music, while also being visually transmitted to the LED screen through musical data. We thought it would be a good fit to express ae-aespa, which is connected with the overwhelming presence of aespa.

As the world of aespa has expanded into a multiverse since Season 2, this ‘Whiplash’ shows aespa opening up another world, that is, data generated in each universe coming together to create a new ae-aespa. As the world of aespa continues to unfold, you will also be able to meet aespa whose data continues to come together in various forms.

  • Despite the plethora of issues I have with the company overall, this is what I appreciate about the creative direction specifically at SM. Even though Whiplash didn't hit for me, I respect it. They aren't afraid of being polarizing and don't play it safe conceptually. Great art is polarizing, and I'm glad SM has at least remained true to really pushing the boundaries of experimenting in Kpop even as they lost their industry dominance. That's what makes Kpop the only mainstream music I really follow.

  • I think it was a great decision

after visual and musical overload that was supernova and armageddon it's refreshing to have something more minimalistic, especially when supernova is still going strong
