Aside from our idiotic and rushed pullout last year, we spent twenty years there - losing thousands of lives and countless billions of dollars. And yet the moment we were gone they immediately returned to their tribal culture. The women of Afghanistan don’t want their daughters to be educated in Western-style universities any more than the tribal elders do. The US military could never change that mindset.
A thousand years would not have been enough. Afghans were given everything they needed to join the modern world, and chose to reject it.
