Do popular variety personalities like the "human vitamins" have longevity for their careers?

  • Every year in the idol variety scene, it feels like we're always getting bubbly, energetic "vitamin" character idols, but how often do they have longevity in their careers?

Now we have Chuu and Yena, who were both recently on Knowing Bros, but before that we have OMG's Seunghee and Momoland's JooE, who are now both far from how they used to be everywhere in variety shows. And with how many idols and idol groups are always coming up, there will inevitably be similar personalities and "fresher" idols in the future.

Who were the "human vitamins" of the 2nd gen idols? Where are they now?

    Approved the thread.
  • looks like it only applies on those kind of personalities.

every comedian still exist and getting paycheck because of their sole gimmick.
to the point that those gimmick will always stick with them even if they changed.

I think for human vitamin, it's a variety mixed with idol persona. So, if that thing didn't came from their actual personality, it could wear off (since idol is always have a young and fresh vibe, which goes along with human vitamin). Even if it is their real personality, it is prone to changed because of how the world affects you (jooe case)

  • Now that you've mentioned it, where are the 2nd gen vitamin idols? I think those tend to wear off quickly in a few years, and unless you have something else to offer, you will be quickly replaced by fresher and newer idols.

Look at Ahn So-hee. She was one of the original "fruity/fresh/bubbly" idols, but she got into acting, which gave her career a much wider and better option than just limiting herself to an idol image.

But not all idols are able to get into acting, so they will have to establish themselves in variety as more than just the bubbly image. And tbh, I don't know if Yena or Chuu has the acting future ahead of them, unless their visuals mature or something. Their idol image is just too strong. Their fans may hate me for saying this but they may also phase out in a few years just like Seunghee or Jooe did.

  • Sunny is the most well known and she’s still really popular in terms of tv projects. She’s regularly on a lot of shows

She's the only one I could think of when writing this post. She's still around on shows, but I wouldn't say she's "trending", but I guess that's not fair since it's been more than 15 years since she's debuted.

But yeah, outside of that, I couldn't think of anyone else.

  • Idk but they will certainly have more longevity than any of the members of Twice

  • Unless they switch full time to variety at the height of their popularity and then kept at it - kim jong kook, it is not possible to have longevity.

Many of them have said that between idol-work, acting and variety - variety is the hardest on them.

Sooyoung is great on variety shows, but acting is her preference.

But variety also gives the best exposure within Korea.

Since the boom of social media, dedicated channels - the top tier group don't bother much with variety, so never develop much aptitude for it. It is the second tier idols who try that strongly, even they quit when their acting takes off.

That is happening with Sejeong now, she had a good run for 3-4 years, but with her dramas being a hit in the last couple of years, you don't see her much in variety shows.

So we do not know if the "vitamins" lack longevity, because they lose popularity, or quit because it is stressful or because they achieve acting success.
