They ship male idols together because they can control that fantasy. It means any dating rumors or even confirmed dating with any woman can't possibly be real so women cease to be any kind of threat. And the ship is usually in the same group so that the fan becomes intensely focused on the group on several different levels. Companies do this stuff on purpose.
The ickiest part is that m/m shippers (and f/f) will tell themselves they are lgbt supporters or allies for this. Yet there is an openly gay idol who gets paid dust. And any current male idol who came out as gay would probably lose his fanbase and career.
