Go back to 2018. If memory serves, MAMA awarded ROTY to Izone over Gidle with Gidle holding a big lead in digitals and fan voting. So MAMA judges can override these 2 factors if they decide to. The problem for New Jeans is their album sales isn't overwhelming IVE sales. IVE also has 2 Izone members so MAMA may not have the motivation to award it to New Jeans.

The name of the award is "Rookie of the Year" not "Best debut of the year".

Imagine if a group smashed out the gate with the best debut possible but then immediately proceeded to flop afterward while other groups with less flashy debut numbers ended up surprassing them.

That would be the dumbest thing ever and furthest thing you can get from fair.

A debut doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things if the overall performance in the year ends up sub par.

The chance of group without privilege winning over big 4 privilege is extremely low anyway so it doesn't matter if you count debut or everything. Big 4 company group will always win.
