Is only getting 5 unpaid days off a year for vacation normal?

  • I interviewed for a job and they said the only vacation I get in my first year is 5 unpaid days off. For my 2nd year, I would get 10 unpaid days off. Is this normal? I did research and it doesn't seem like it is. The interview was awful and the job's not for me for other reasons as well (person who I spoke with was awful and I dislike the general vibe of the place). So I'm not asking for advice but I'm just curious how normal this is. Would you take a job like this or is it best to wait for another opportunity?

  • Depends on where you live I but in my country it's far from normal, in fact it's illegal not to give your employs 25 days of paid vacation. I know it can vary a lot from country to country but only five unpaid days off sounds sketchy for sure. I'd avoid that place if I was you.

  • it's not and i wouldn't take this opportunity.

  • not normal where i live. you get like 4-6 weeks with paid

  • So it really depends on where you live and how the company is. PTO, paid time off, are usually accumulated over paycheck, you get X hours off for the X amount of hours worked. Some company put a cap on PTO i.e 40 hours, 60 hours, etc. And you cannot accumulate anymore unless you spend those hours.

With all that being said, normally PTOs are usually 2 weeks, 80 business hours, again, could be more or less depending on company or if you're a contractor. I live in 'murica so I can only comment as such. I know Europe have weeks if not months of PTO, yes, USA sucked ):. We're corporates run. Anyways, if you don't like the vibe or workstyle that they have, best not to take the offer. PTO is just a variable at this point if that's how you feel.

FYI, The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does NOT require company to PTO their employees, however many does it because happy worker = better work.

  • i didn't get vacation time my first year. But after that i get 22 paid vacation days per year.

  • Its not normal, dont take it imo youll be dodging a bullet. If thats normal for the company then it's high likely that they explore their workers and thats just the tip of the iceberg.

  • You should check the paid vacation length of jobs in your country. Seems illegal to me.
