Why is it said that Teddy makes western sounding songs for Blackpink?

  • I don't see it, can you name me some recent pop artists who do? edm is not even in anymore out there. All I know is the members themselves have western appeal minus Jisoo and maybe Jenlisa's execution of the raps in their songs are palatable towards a western audience. But where is the western specific sound?

    Approved the thread.
  • I would say because they are more popular in the west and appeal more to the west. So they just keep wanting to keep up the appeal.

  • Jisoo not having western appeal? She pulled the biggest crowd in Paris fashion week

  • Never heard that I've heard them say he makes dated sounding songs for bp

I often see kpop fans say bp makes music for westerners and for western validation and i really don't get it. Most western pop stars at least the mpgs do not even make songs like them and if you see what trends in US or the west in general, I dont see bp-esque sound precisely

  • Honestly people putting that narrative of BP has the western sound is kinda dumb, most of BP instrumentals are very dynamic, beat changes most of the time and they build a lot in the prechorus. The only music in western scene that do that is DJ type, yet they also rely on keeping the same beat in the second part of the song, while BP also changes the sound in the second part of the song.

Western music is more about keeping the beat static and not changing it that much, while BP and Kpop in general do change the instrumentals a lot

  • They don't really have any more western sounding songs than any other kpop groups. That's just something kpoppies came up to explain their favs flopping compared to them.

Yeah I agree with you on this one, like songs like ktl, hylt have drastic change of instrumental and beats unlike pop songs trendy in the west where its usually very one chord centred with little progression

Yes, it also explains why IC was seen such a letdown in kpop. The song had the same beat running for the entire song, it didn't change the beat

O come on I am not undermining her popularity but is it really wrong for me to say out of all the 4 members she is the least westernized and about the pfw thing, well duh she is a bp member attending and french blinks will of course go and support her. I am not saying she is not popular among western fans per se but more so she ranks last when it comes to having the western vibe and appeal.

  • Teddy grew up in the USA so its not surprising theres western influence in their music

All kpop songs these days have western influence and many big companies literally buy demos from foreign producers for their artists so they have western influence as well. I just don't see why bp is singled out for having a westernised sound especially when their sound is not even actually trendy in the west.

  • Yes it's western. It's influenced by black music, they use aave, their asthetics are "gangster". They are absolutely marketed towards the American taste and you are blind if you can't see it.

The whole of kpop is influenced by black music, so you are not making much of a point here especially hiphop based kpop groups and khiphop genre is just a poor version of black pop and rap music scene

  • Teddy's been "borrowing" from western music from the jump so the description makes sense.

Such an odd thing to say as though the entirety of kpop isn’t influenced by black music.
