billboard relies heavily on radio and US labels won't give korean acts half of that 87m radio play

  • Kpop is not that big here

They shouldn't be topping our charts if they aren't actually popular.

Buying multiple copies of a song and robbing people that actually deserve #1 is bullshit

what about the songs that deserved #1 but got blocked because of radio payola?

hello... Payola? You mean kpop disrupting "business" over there.

  • Americans have been controlled by radio since forever. They are so used to it that they didn’t realised that they are manipulated by corporate greed. It’s fascinating.

  • it's probably more about sponsorship as well as the idea that since Billboard already has a K-POP chart (https://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-korea-100/) that they don't want to oversaturate. It's not necessarily fair but it's not up to the hoi polloi to have more weight than Billboard's sponsors, usually.

Americans aren't totally unaware, but the ones who are aware are powerless to change a whole industry.

  • I wish BB isn't heavily reliant to radio but I've been wishing this for years now.

    Lizzo deserves that #1 though.

  • Good. Kpop was oversaturing the west compared how big the genre actually is there.

I could still see bts still topping hot100 though. They did #13 with a slow, korean ballad that had zero promo. With a hyped, well promoted song of collab they could still do #1, but probably for only one of two weeks max. Lets see how Bad Decision will do.

I'm gonna wait till bps CB, but i think these new rules are mostly gonna hold back every other kpop group.

  • It's crazy how bad bunny charts so high with almost no radio, his song líterally doing more numbers than the viral stranger things track

  • As an American, half of those songs are not that popular here. Most americans don't even care about radio, they just have it on cus it's some music. The main reason songs get on bb hot 100 is because of radioplay, and that's controlled by record labels.

Half of those songs if not more wouldn't be on that chart without radio play. Want some proof? Let's look at the song Numb Little Bug(I love this song personally and relate to it a lot but I am not going to pretend it's success is driven completely by the people).

It got 5.4 million streams and 1.2k sales(some of the lowest numbers in the chart), not bad but def not enough to keep you stable in top 20 of a billboard hot 100 chart. So why is it stable and holding on?

Its 49.8 million radioplay reach, some of the highest in the chart. How is it getting so much radio play despite it's other numbers not being so strong and it's fame to the public dwindling?

The song are not getting millions of radioplay because of people requesting for them. I mean, you are telling me that people are requesting that song every 30 minutes despite it not even being that popular anymore, not even viral, it's release date a long time ago and it's streams and sales are some of the lowest?

I'll tell you why, the record label the singer of this song is signed under Republic Records.

    Em Beihold

One of the biggest, if not the biggest record labels in America. The wheels are turning aren't they?

Radio is a great promotional tactic, I got to know of this song from the radio playing it every 30 minutes as well, but it should not be used as an indicator of success with how manipulated it is.

Kudos to Bad Bunny, his song is on the chart without radioplay, infact it has the highest streams, but some of the lowest radio play. If that doesn't show you how manipulated this is I don't know what does.

Let's hope radio companies starts playing foreign artists songs more, and stop using the same old "they are not that popular here" excuse while using those same not so popular artists to fill out their concerts.

Y'all complain about mass buying and things, at least those mass buyings are made by people, not companies.

cos is more fair to be controlled by 100 fans that raise money to buy 1M albums or more and really do not represent what people are actually listening to?

    blah

    blah

You are too biased if you can't see that the two things are wrong, BB made sure that people couldn't top the chart by bulk buying, but they didn't change that radioplay holds more power than sales and streaming, which it doesn't even make sense, if we really want to see the most popular songs they've would have changed that.

  • I can't see any picture in the first post. When did this change happen?

And aren't most radiostations in the US owned by a few super rich conservative old guys these days, that push their own biased agendas (and cough, who are let's say less 'orientally' minded or anything else non-American)?

  • most americans don't listen to radio. everyone streams here

  • no they just changed fandoms misusing the mass-buying feature with actual no hype from american gp for their songs which in turn was affecting songs that were actually charting higher on US SPOTIFY, AM and having more demand on the radio. The one thing I would definitely like for them to remove now is labels using payola for A list western acts and let only organic songs on demand being played by radio, be counted.
