I. Introduction
Coming Home is a digital single from NCT U as part of the SM station season, SM Station X 4 LOVEs for Winter is a special winter season of SM Station singles that launched in November 2019 to celebrate the winter season. This was the second single of the season and was styled as SM Station X 4 LOVEs for Winter Pt. 2. It was released on December 13, 2019.
II. Background & Release
SM Station is a digital music project under SM Entertainment that involves solos or duets from members in existing SM groups, as well as opportunities for singers to experiment in other genres or collaborate with artists inside and outside of SM Entertainment. The project releases a number of singles digitally each year on digital platforms, including streaming audio like Spotify.
Seasonal collections of winter songs were an ongoing tradition for SM. This season, SM Station x 4 LOVEs for Winter, was described as songs of "winter" and "love." Although four songs were announced and promoted, only three were released, including a promotional song with UNICEF. This season also included a special promotional trailer and photos featuring NCT's Jaehyun, who appears on one of the songs for the season.
The NCT U sub-unit is a special promotional unit within the NCT boy group that is made up of rotational members. Members are chosen to perform based on the song and concept. As this concept was a vocally driven ballad, members of the unit included the main vocalists for the sub-unit NCT 127: Taeil, Doyoung, Jaehyun and Haechan. Several members of this unit had appeared on previous SM Station songs, including a ballad "Timeless" in 2018 that included Taeil, Doyoung and Jaehyun.
The song was described by SM as "a slow-tempo R&B ballad with a rich string section, sweet guitar arounds and piano melody. It contains a message of thanks and love and the beautiful harmony of [the members] adds to the charm of the song."
Teaser videos were released for five days ahead of the song and video launch, featuring the members.
