I. Introduction
NCT Chinese Special Tips is a YouTube variety reality series where Chinese members of the boy group NCT teach other members Mandarin, while competing in teams and competitions.
II. Overview
The group structure of NCT is unique among K-Pop groups due to the fact that the concept of NCT is an ever expanding group with "unlimited" members and it is comprised of several individual subunits. Currently there are 23 members in NCT, making up four individual subunits. The sub-units combine to create an all-unit project in select years that features all NCT members, debuts new ones, releases albums and appears on TV shows, web and social content.
As part of the NCT 2020 Resonance event, NCT's YouTube channels posted daily content, including limited time shows, cross-unit shows and special episodes of ongoing shows.
NCT Chinese Special Tips is a variety web show where Chinese members of NCT Dream, "Brother of the Northeast" Renjun and "Vice President of Shanghai" Chenle, teach Mandarin to members of NCT 127, including Canadian Markand Koreans Taeyong, Doyoung and Jungwoo. The members also compete in teams for prizes.
This is the fourth show where NCT 127 members are learning a language - they previously learned Japanese in NCT 127 Teach Me Japan, English in NCT 127 American School 101 and Indonesian in Halo! Indonesian School. Like the Indonesian school, this series digs deeper into phrases, language usage and grammar than the Japanese or American series.
The series had 5 episodes and ran from September 26 to October 23, 2020 on the NCT Daily YouTube channel.

IV. Trivia
- The intro music of the show comes from the NCT 127 song "Kick It," released earlier that year.
- Renjun and Chenle are native Mandarin speakers. Taeyong, Doyoung and Jungwoo are native Korean speakers. Mark is a native English speaker, so this is his third language.
- Since the Hallyu ban was lifted, kpop groups could promote in China, which is partly what they're referencing here.
-Episode 1:
Taeyong mentions he wants to get closer to Chinese members of NCT. While there are none in NCT 127 at this time, there are two in Dream (Renjun and Chenle), and most of the members of WayV (Kun, Winwin, Lucas, Xiaojun, Hendery, YangYang).
- Doyoung says he wants to learn Chinese to get closer to Renjun, which is an ongoing joke through Resonance content about their episode of the show It's Awkward, But It's OK.
- Members laugh about Jungwoo's introduction, saying he's been using it since a trainee.
- Jungwoo, Doyoung and Taeyong all spent time as trainees with Chinese members of NCT. (Doyoung and Taeyong with Kun and Winwin. Winwin was also a former member of NCT 127 before moving units. Jungwoo debuted last and trained with all of WayV, including Kun, Lucas, Xiaojun, Hendery and YangYang.)
- Before being permanently assigned to their sub-units, Doyoung and Jungwoo also studied Chinese, potentially with a plan to add them to the NCT China unit, which would later become WayV.
- The WayV leader Kun, who trained with them all, laughed about this in a separate Weibo live while watching this show and providing reactions.
- Mark's nickname is also reflected in his NCT emoji.
- Taeyong called Chenle "xiao" or baby because he is the second youngest member in all of NCT.
- Doyoung's nickname is rabbit or bunny and it's his NCT emoji.
Episode 2:
- The obsession with hot pot is a long-running joke with Chinese NCT members.
Episode 3:
- I Am Ground is popular in NCT content, although it's usually the non-native Korean members who often struggle with it. This time, the game is in Mandarin.
- Mark's love of watermelon is a long-running joke in content.
Episode 5:
- NCT Dream used to record their title tracks in Mandarin and Korean. Two of the three main vocalists are Chinese - Renjun and Chenle, who are in this show - and fluent in both languages. The third vocalist, Haechan, is Korean.
- They are also singing NCT Dream's "My First and Last." It too was released in both languages.
- Doyoung is a main vocalist and Jungwoo a lead vocalist in NCT 127, so each team has a pair of vocalists. Taeyong and Mark are rappers, not vocalists in the groups.
