Song Joong-ki

I. Introduction

Song Joong-ki, born on September 19, 1985, is an actor who rose to fame after the historical drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal and the variety show Running Man in 2010. A decade later, Song Joongi-ki has established a name for himself as one of the most accomplished as well as the highest paid actors in the country.

Born and raised in Daejeon, Joong-ki competed in speed skating nation-wide, but an injury forced him to give up the sport. He was admitted to Sungkyunkwan University, but he was scouted by an agency when he came briefly to Seoul. His father objected to him becoming an actor, so Joongi-ki continued to study till he reached third year of university and began to work full-time in the entertainment industry, eventually graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 2012.

Joongi-ki had a steady and successful path. He played diverse roles in television like The Innocent Man, Descendants of the Sun, Arthdal Chronicles and Vincenzo. Cinema wise, Joong-ki acted in A Werewolf Boy and The Battleship Island, both on the list of the highest grossing films in the country.

In 2021, he starred as the titular character in the series Vincenzo, which was released on February 20, 2021 on Netflix and tvN. It became the 6th highest-rated drama in tvN history after its finale, and is currently the 9th highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history.

He is set to appear in the criminal thriller film Bogota alongside Lee Hee-joon and Kwon Hae-hyo, which will be directed by Kim Seong-je.

- Song was declared by Gallup as Korea's Actor of the Year in 2012 and 2017. In addition, Song was made the Korean Tourism Honorary Ambassador by the Korea Tourism Organization to actively promote Korean tourism worldwide, an expected feat after the success of the drama Descendants of the Sun which was incredibly popular in Korea with a peak viewership rating of 41.6% and in Asia, where it was viewed 2.5 billion times on IQiyi.

- Song became the face of over 30 brands and was one of the recipients of Korea's "Brand of the Year" award. Song won the Daesang at the 30th KBS Drama Awards and the 5th APAN Star Awards as well as the Best Actor (TV) award at the 11th Seoul International Drama Awards and the 29th Korean Producer Awards for his acting performance. He then embarked on a series of sold-out Asian tour spanning 10 different cities, where he met more than 60,000 fans.
