Seulgi was always enamored with Jungkook. She told him, "I have always loved you."

They first talked to one another at an afterparty of one of those end-of-the-year award shows. The next night they rode together in the backseat of a mutual friend's car. Seulgi straightened herself in the backseat and smoothed her skirt. Seulgi ignored him and stared out the window. It was early Sunday evening, mid December, and the streets of Seoul looked stale; crusts of snow lay shriveled on the sidewalk, and cardboard images of Santa Claus leered out of close stores.

"I still don't feel right about you driving me all the way out here," Seulgi called to the mutual friend, who was driving.

The truth was that she would much rather have taken the taxi, alone, as usual back to her dorm; but she couldn't completely rid herself of the excitement that Jungkook was there.

Neither of them spoke for what seemed a long time, and in the noise of the car radio and the noise of laughing from the front seats, their silence seemed strange. He began to shuffle his legs. Seulgi's eyes strayed to his silhouetted side. The surprising thing was that Jungkook looked more mature in person than he did when she saw him on stage or on TV and videos. Probably it was the thicker face and build, and of course the clothes helped-- the dark suit jacket and the gleaming boots. Oh, he'd been good-looking, all right, with his set jaw and hard eyes--the eyes that gave him the look of a thin little boy. When he accidently touched her while fixing his jacket, all at once Seulgi's throat closed up and the streetlight swam in her eyes. Then the side of her forefinger was grasped by her front teeth, making little puffs of mist that floated away in the dark. It took her a long time to realize the tic, and each sniffling intake of breath made a faint sharp noise that sounded as if it could be heard for miles. Finally it was over, or nearly over; the car arrived in front of her dorm building. She managed to control her shoulders and with a reassuring, businesslike snap took her handbag and told them, him, goodbye with a little wave of her hand.
