But I believe many only check the OP/ED of the anime they're watching, they don't delve into J-pop nor J-rock.
Anime songs usually didn't have an official version on YouTube before YouTube Music. And even with YTM they're very hard to find. You will usually search for One Piece Opening 15, instead of Hiroshi Kitadani ウィーキャン!, so you will never find the original song. So the views are scattered everywhere.
Also, the fact that the full opening/ending usually are released after either the anime has ended or the op/ed changed doesn't help on promotion.
Furthermore, anime in the west date as back as the 80's. Back then people didn't even have internet to check the anime songs.
