There is some saying from a famous writer, that aplies to us: servents - not born, but raised (there is no better translation, but you get what I mean probably).
Well the point is the tendencies for education were different here than in China probably. To break free from opresors, especially with our minds and brains, since we never got any power or numbers. So I guess we all came to similar conclusion considering education

probably not much different since historically one of the only ways to get ahead from being a mere peasant and be someone was to study hard and qualify for government exams and if passed then one becomes an official with power and influence and wealth...
