About Mingyu's collage and misogyny

  • I'm posting this because I'm seeing a lot of misinformation being spread, doing it on anon since I don't feel like being personally attacked today.

    1) Mingyu's collage is about the fashion industry, particularly about the image it projects and the reality of it. The full piece is two separate collages that sit side by side. The first one is the "clean" one (the surface of the industry) and the second one is the one which created this controversy (the reality of the industry). Hence the focus on different fashion shoots, the camera, the brand names and phrases used, and the fact that includes male models as well which people like to ignore. Mingyu himself has done modeling runways and mentioned not liking the experience. While he's never made any official statements on this piece, this is the most common interpretation from people who actually look at it objectively. Personally, I don't think it looks nice and it's very amateur but the message is very clear.

Look at them side by side and think about entire picture and the intended message, don't just focus on random parts.

    2) This collage was posted without his permission and seemed more like a vent piece of anything. He never intended this to be public and the person who framed it, shared it before deleting it. I've seen people choose to ignore the most likely reason behind this piece being the fashion industry (and not his desire to hurt women) and start talking about how he should be responsible for how it comes across. If he wanted to make it public, yes, he would be. But he never wanted this to be public, this art was only for himself or whoever he made it for if it was a gift.

    3) This is most important! Mingyu's collage did not include images of actual dismembered women. The images themselves were cut apart but they were from fashion magazines, he did not take from images of dismembered and murdered women like some people have said. That's just disgusting to make up and shows where someone's heart is to make such lies.

    4) It’s highly questionable if the red paint is even made to be blood or if it’s just following his usual “artistic” signature. He splashes paint across every collage of his, usually red paint. He even has a collage of Seventeen “dismembered” and splashed with red paint. Does he wish to see the members (including himself) murdered now? I will say that the red paint, even in the context, makes sense as blood on the controversial collage considering the message he was trying to convey of the harsh and seemingly brutal reality of the industry. Whether or not it is blood is up to interpretation but I wouldn't rule it out.

    5) Mingyu’s red post could be in favor of the election and could not be in favor of the election, we don’t now the reasoning behind it. Mingyu commonly matches a colored emoji heart to whatever he’s wearing. This is not something new and could have been an oversight. It wouldn't be the first time an idol did something tone deaf but it also wouldn't be the first time a man was openly sexist. Who knows! And unless he says something, we don't.

    6) Mingyu’s bullying accusations have already been cleared and dealt with, please stop spreading misinformation. Even if you choose to interpret the last two situations how you want, this one is just honestly not up for interpretation at this point.

    7) Lets not blindly hate on idols and think critically before we spread hate and misinformation. And if I’m wrong and he really is a women-hater with murderous tendencies, guess I’m a fool and my bad for this post!

    Approved the thread.
  • Thank you! I've seen way too much misinformation about both the collage and the very much disproven bullying scandal. Too bad I doubt the people spreading that misinfo will even read this :(

Hopefully them and other people who have read all the misinformation will read this, I wish I wasn't so afraid of being attacked or I would post this outside of anons where it might be seen by more. The best we can do is just try to spread the correct information as much as possible.

Really wish he would make a statement so I could know for certain what his instagram post meant but for now I'll stay neutral. The likelyhood of pledis saying anything is rather low so I wouldn't get my hopes up though. Hope you're doing well!

  • I think the red part is suspicious. Everyone: even little kids who are on the internet are being careful not to post red/blue stuff because of the election news. Mingyu waited a month to post this, and it is him wearing bright red. His member was wearing blue JUST for the election. It's no shocker Mingyu may do the same thing.

Because Pledis won't say "oh he voted democrat haha". He feels secure enough to say his voting position.

  • b-but how i-kpoppies are gonna feel good about themselves without attacking an idol for no valid reason while soundin' holier than thou at the same time? have you thought about kpoppies fragile ego and fake virtue signaling?

Agreed which is why I said we don't know what he meant. There's only two possible explanations and neither have any evidence. If it comes out that he really did vote in support of that man then I'll drop him, but remain neutral for now. I feel we're too quick to make conclusions. After how his bullying scandal and other idol scandals have gone down, I've decided to remain neutral before supporting destroying someone's career and reputation.

Also I don't see how his other member wearing blue (was it even confirmed it was in reference to the election?) would reflect his own reasons for posting this image. Considering the political climate, I highly doubt they would be discussing posting images for support of their respective candidates with each other or be on friendly talking levels at all.

  • Don't do this to yourself. Just detach yourself from him slowly.

Did you even read the post? 2/3 aren't even issues and the instagram post ultimately says nothing until he makes a statement or any further evidence for his political stance is revealed.

If it's revealed he really did vote for that man and holds such beliefs then I'll drop him without a second thought but I'm personally not one for attacking people and ruining careers without solid evidence. Why should I sit here and watch people spread misinformation?

You're skipping over the fact that it's an old picture, and idols have been paying special care not to wear red and blue this week.

  • The picture in red in likely a clear show of his political views. He has a right to choose whatever political views he wants and it's up to you to decide if that matters to you.

Almost 80% of the young male population like that guys weird views and that includes those in the kpop industry as well. It's a depressing statistic tbh. Probably some of my faves are his supporters too.

My country is far from a women's utopia and is terribly sexist but a candidate being this openly misogynistic would never ever happen. Korea has some interesting social problems.

  • People have made up their mind he is a misogynist… don’t ruin their virtue signaling.

  • The community has found a new villain and they'll savor it until the next one comes along, don't even bother with reasoning.

His main opponent is also openly misogynistic. The dude was caught publicly posting gross comments about what he wanted to do sexually to women, including a member of a fourth gen GG. Violent stuff too, you can find it online. Female voters were in a tough spot this time. Both the top candidates hate them.

Yeah, Mingyu in particular seems to be a fun choice of punching bag for some reason. His bullying controversy was brutal with people calling him names, bringing up this same collage, calling for the end of his career from the first post, wanting him to be arrested, and even telling him to k*ll himself. And the moment the situation switched and he was actually innocent, they either chose to ignore it and continued to hate or went silent and never apologized for the awfulness. Ironically perpetuating the bullying behavior they supposedly hate so much.

And now with this situation, they're doing the same exact thing, attacking without the full story. I even saw someone on twitter saying they wish the same thing would happen to Mingyu that happened to the women in his collage (supposedly being dismembered and murdered). Disgusting overall and the behavior once again funnily ironic to bash him for "violent and hateful behaviors" and then be incredibly violent and hateful themselves.

It makes me question how many kpop fans actually care about misogyny here vs just want to attack another idol.

  • Great, and now people are spreading the video of him and the staff while clipping out the part where they are clearly talking and she giggles at the end. Completely consensual interaction with him, another member, and another staff member behind them talking and discussing whatever it is they're doing.

Full clip, and seeing as how the saesang who filmed them from inside the closet already cut it down to this much, it's probable that a friendly conversation was happening and she wasn't upset at all/this wasn't out of nowhere. She even lifted her arms for him.

  • the day bg stans could accept that some oppas are misogyny and anti feminism it's the day we can finally find peace. Hey the statictis said that 50-70% of korean men in 20's are anti feminism so it's safe to say that 50% of male idol have the same sentiment too

  • If you actually wanted to clear his name or mitigate it then you should do it on the main forum so that everyone can instead of being scared and doing it in anon where most likely won't even read it.

If you or anyone else want to repost what I wrote as thread in the main forum, please go ahead and do it. I don't mind and would actually really appreciate it. I've just seen the amount of hate going around right now and don't want to be attacked.

You're right that not many people have seen this due to it being in anons so it could actually help a lot.
