Despite their divisive nature, some trolls get banned on somewhat light stuff. May be just a "nip it in the bud situation though"

  • Threadlocked and banned for somewhat light stuff.

    https://forum.allkpop.com/thread/78131(<< pretty light)

    https://forum.allkpop.com/thread/78130 (<< kind of a hating thread)

    for punishment:

    - They were skirting the line for personal insult. never really got there but they were damned close

    - They started a divisive thread. ok nevermind, two.

    - Some AKP'ers possibly recognized the speaking style. Could be repeat offender.

    Mitigating factors:

-They had some pretty deep misconceptions on how the kpop industry works so I was even thinking that they were new to the kpop scene. (despite implying seniority due to claiming falling standards)

-They didn't go immediate for pathos driven arguments (insults, personal attacks).

-They tried logos arguments but then again when you really analyze it it was a pathos argument.

My conclusion would be to probably sandbox them or something. My reflex as an Ex-discord mod would be to put them into an isolated thread or threads where mods could review with them if they are actually toxic or just out of bounds on the situation. (could just restrict them to their own profile page.)

I recognise that AKP forums may not be big enough or have enough resources to deal with these offenders with accommodation. And the action already taken is still within bounds of normal for me.

I want to know your thoughts on what happened, and if you can, bring up past examples that were clear violations but something was iffy.

I am not critiquing the mods - they did an exemplary job and I congratulate that.

I just want to start the discussion of researching trolls and divisive threads to see how we can better recognize and differentiate a hotheaded newbie from truly toxic people. They present similarly and often get banned before they can differentiate certain traits to label themselves one way or another.

I recognize this as a research opportunity and I hope you see it as such as well. If not, I hope you respect the thread but since its anon get whatever off your chest.

I'd like to keep replies anon so people don't go fighting each other outside this thread.

  • Hey, it's Ibby here. I approved this to answer you.

I understand the rationale behind this thread, but I'm sorry to disappoint. This thread could have worked with any other user, except the one you picked. The user was an alt, of a banned user. As simple as that.

Users may not understand the decisions taken by staff, but trust me, they come from a good place. When in doubt, don't hesitate to DM any of us.

  • I know this is not going to be a low effort reply thread and this thread might die because of that but please please give it thought and material.

  • i think the mods could trace whether the user is alt or not

  • Any kind of trolling behaviour needs to be dealt with whether trivial or not. They only do it to get a rise out of people and they achieve it - they are sad imao

I feared as much. I have no honest way of knowing of alts vs newbies and I was really kinda worried the example will fire back on the argument haha. I tried also to avoid well known fierce defenders because although they fit the bill quite nicely, I did not want to go and attract unnecessary attention to them haha. whoops
