  • Since you are still in college, it might be hard since you say you are socially awkward but asking professors for openings in doing legwork of research is also a pretty good way to start, especially in college. If you can't do a face to face, just email the prof outta nowhere. Cold emails are way more common than you think and the worst you can get is a "sorry we don't have a spot" That doesn't mean failure, that just means that the door isn't there, its probably farther down the hall.

  • why not work on those things first?

i mean getting a new job will necessarily involve learning new skills...interacting with people and dealing with sometimes complex situations where your anxiety might kick in to create an unfavourable situation

so maybe do things or read or work on yourself first before looking for a new job

I agree with this. Take a part time job or volunteer your time for a good cause. Get yourself comfortable in a social setting. Over time, I think you'll feel more and more comfortable with those types of situations.

Also as someone said above, you have the rest of your life to work, don't get too anxious or worried if some of your friends get an early start. Everyone works at different speed, and have different priorities. As long as you don't give up and are willing to work hard, you'll be fine.
