How come people were unaware of Gangnam Style in 2012?

  • Your memory fails you, as the Macarena craze happened in 1996, a full 16 years earlier.

I looked it up after I posted and yeah the years are way off. I think that the Macarena was probably brought up frequently with GS, as a comparison. That is probably why I thought the 2 came out at the same time. The Harlem shake also came out the same year as GS and twerking also started going viral a year later. I must’ve lumped them all together in my memory.

  • I would say Gangnam Style had nothing to do with kpop, it was mainly just a funny asian dude going viral on internet with a funny dance and a pretty good song. At least if you lived in the "west". Many kpop fans also are young, so if you became a couple of years after GS it's not strange if they was so young they did not really know much about it.

What psy did was in fact kpop. Kpop is not only about idol groups, there are kpop artists as well like IU, Psy etc.

Psy was just not " that kind of kpop" that got peoppe interested, or rather invested in kpop.

Okey, maybe I misspoke a bit, I mainly meant that the Gangnam Style hype did not had so much do with kpop from the view of people outside of kpop, even if it's a part of the kpop.
