The divorce between T-ara's Jiyeon (31) and professional baseball player Hwang Jaekyun (37, KT Wiz) has been legally finalized after undergoing mediation in court.

Neither Jiyeon nor Hwang Jaekyun attended the mediation session held the previous day, and only their legal representatives appeared in court. The representatives are reported to have engaged in lengthy discussions about the mediation.
There are two main methods of divorce: mutual consent divorce and judicial divorce. Typically, when a couple agrees to divorce, they can proceed with mutual consent divorce. If an agreement cannot be reached, a judicial divorce through court proceedings is pursued.
However, in high-profile divorce cases involving celebrities or famous athletes, it is common for the divorce to be processed through "mediation," where only legal representatives attend, allowing the divorce to proceed without public exposure.
Divorce lawyer Lee Incheol explained, "If a couple opts for mutual consent divorce, they must appear together in court, which inevitably exposes them to the public. Mediation, on the other hand, is private, and only the representatives need to appear. Therefore, celebrities or wealthy individuals often choose mediation for a more strategic, private divorce."
Previously, Jiyeon's legal representative stated on November 5th, "The couple could not overcome their differences and, after living separately, have agreed to divorce. They have submitted a divorce mediation request to the Seoul Family Court."
Jiyeon also expressed through her legal representative, "I apologize for delivering bad news. We have agreed to proceed with the divorce mediation process." She continued, "I ask for your understanding for not being able to express our position sooner, and I will strive to show a better version of myself in the future."
Meanwhile, Jiyeon and Hwang Jaekyun announced their marriage in February 2022, just six months after they began dating, and held their wedding in December of the same year. Recently, rumors of separation and divorce had been circulating.
Jiyeon debuted in 2009 as a member of the girl group T-ara. Along with the group, she released hit songs such as "Roly-Poly" and "Why Are You Like This."
Hwang Jae-kyun made his professional debut in 2006. After playing for Nexen and Lotte, he is currently with KT Wiz. A former national team third baseman, he won his first Korean Series title in 2021.
