South Koreans do try a lot to live up to Western markets. Like giving up on "dog meat" because it offends sensibilities shaped by the West.
Kpop is increasingly export oriented than culturally representative of S.Korea - more and more English lyrics, less and less Korean.
But then Korea has always been historically overshadowed either by China or Japan and now that US is the biggest bully in the world, US.
Smaller nations have to survive that way. At least S.Korea provides great value in electronics, cars and culture, that is well appreciated.
Others might have opinions, but ultimately each society has to decide for itself.
