Have you watched any Danish movie?

  • Well... I have watched a lot of them.

Some of the ones that I have watched might not have English subtitles though.

I'm going to talk about some Danish movies that I have watched that seem to be very popular. (despite the fact that I feel like the most popular ones are the ones that I haven't watched)

    In A Better World

    original title: Hævnen

It is a long time ago since I have watched that movie.

I remember it as if the movie had a good message. (I don't know if I have misunderstood the message though)

It won Best Foreign Language Film at both the Oscars and Golden Globe.

    Babette's Feast

    original title: Babettes Gæstebud

I actually really like this movie and have watched it twice.

Despite the fact that it kinda feels like the kind of movie that a teacher would force their pupils to watch in class. (and it wouldn't surprise me, if that has happened)

I have also read the short story that the movie is based on, which was written by Karen Blixen.

The movie won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and is the first Danish movie to do so.

I have heard that some Americans have watched the movie in cinema and complained about it having subtitles... (well... the movie does also have some Danish subtitles because of there being Swedish and French spoken in that movie)

I have heard about this movie probably getting an American remake, even though that might actually end up never happening.

I have sometimes thought about this movie like "What would have changed if this movie was made today instead of 1987?", but there are some stuff about this movie that makes me feel "They don't make movies like this anymore".

    A Fish Tale

original title: Hjælp! Jeg er en fisk

An animated movie, which also has an English dub starring Alan Rickman and Aaron Paul.

I have watched that movie a lot when I was younger.

And I also remember when one of the songs from that movie's soundtrack was playing a lot in my country's radio.

In the original Danish, the movie had a few swear words (I'm used to hearing that in Danish children's stuff) and there was also a joke that got lost in translation.

  • I've seen Druk with Mads Mikkelsen from 2020. I watched it in the original language with subtitles at the time. Makes me realize I haven't explored the Scandinavian film culture at all!

  • I just watched Another Round, and I really enjoyed it! It’s about a group of teachers who try a drinking experiment to see how it affects their lives. The storytelling is so engaging, and the performances are fantastic. It got me thinking about the balance between fun and responsibility.
