During 1812-1814, USA was at war against Britain.
The War was mostly fought in what is now Canada, but in 1814 a daring British move captured Washington DC, and burnt the White House (the Capitol was not built yet).
As the Napoleonic War drew to a class, General Pakenham, a brother in law of Arthur Wellesley, was sent to capture the strategic city of New Orleans. Capture of it would block the waterway of Mississippi from the Americans.
Pakenham was defeated and killed by Andrew Jackson, which would later make him a US President and also put him to the $20 bill.
After Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington remarked that if he had the troops his brother-in-law wasted in USA, he would have attacked Napoleon first.
