So in first round there were 1 vs. 1 death matches
later on those who lost were grouped they were singing together in 4 member team units in special consolation round something like repechage in sports
and then there was additional voting and the best ones were "saved" from elimination
I think this is actually very nice thing, much better than the whole "let's always have ranking" popularity contest
