Even though I watched all of GP999 and was pretty damn invested I ended up not really following Kep1er after the debut. During the debut I was still watching all their stages, variety shows etc. but the interest faded. For me it's a combination of many factors, from most impactful to least:
1. Debut song was not good. The teaser had me hyped but when I heard the 'ooo ooo' part it turned into severe disappointment. I also didn't enjoy MVSK because it sounded like a budget IZ*ONE song. In the end its hard to stan even if you're invested deeply if you don't enjoy the music.
2. None of my top picks made the lineup. While a lot of contestants I liked made it in, it still killed off some of the interest.
3. Heavily overshadowed by other groups at time of debut: IVE, fromis_9 and more
They needed to succeed when the momentum was there and all eyes were on them but frankly the debut was disappointing. The comeback was much better, both 'Up' and the B-sides but 2022 has been an insane year in K-pop and it didn't really stand out compared to the other releases this year.
This was just some perspective from someone who 'moved on' from Kep1er even after having very high initial interest. I still 'like' the group and will check out all their future releases.
As for why people hate on Kep1er - no clue. It's still a successful group with strong sales and they're super popular in Japan.
