"One Piece Film: Red" Sails Past 12 Billion Yen at JP Box Office, becomes Japan's highest grossing film of 2022

    Despite opening nearly a month ago, One Piece Film: Red continues to dominate the Japanese box office, with the official Twitter account for the anime film announcing tonight that it has delivered a bounty of more than 12 billion yen in a mere 26 days, being the second-fastest film to do so in Japan after Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train.

    As of September 1, One Piece Film: Red's 26th day in theaters in Japan, the swashbuckling anime film has made more than 12 billion yen (US$87.26 million) on the back of 8.6 million tickets sold. This pushes Film: Red to the 26th spot on the all-time Japanese box office chart, right behind The Wind Rises at 12.02 billion yen (US $116.9 million). Film: Red has also overtaken Top Gun Maverick as the second-highest grossing film in the 2022 box office ranking, which Japanese box offices track as December 2021 to November 2022, with only JUJUTSU KAISEN 0's 13.75 billion yen to beat. For the calendar year 2022, One Piece Film: Red has taken first place.
