Do asian fans think aespa is popular in the west?

  • I've recently been thinking abt how intl fans dont really know what groups are popular in korea do rely on chart rankings, brand rankings, achievements, and headlines to gauge popularity.

We all know aespa is not popular in the west. However on paper, they've gone on multiple TV shows as guests, performed at Coachella (were media played as the 1st kpop group to headline), performed at the New Years parade, had a sold out showcase that they decided to add another day, and now they're even getting played on the radio.

Seeing all that, I feel like asians fans might genuinely think they're popular in the West despite not being so.

  • Jesus, can you people say this on main? Getting annoying.

  • It's honestly an interesting topic. Not only regards to Aespa. Sometimes translated articles pop up clearly showing that knetz are just as confused over which groups are popular internationally as ifans are about groups' domestic success. Sometimes they're shocked over a groups achievements internationally that isn't very well known in Korea (I think I've seen comments like this about Ateez for example) or the opposite, a trendy group/song in Korea that isn't gaining as much attention internationally.

And as in OPs example knetz sometimes misjudge groups' popularity based on media play or numbers taken out of context. I've definitely read knetz comments about idols' international success and thought "Oh that's not it, they got it wrong".
