NCT - Resonance

  • I. Introduction

"Resonance" is a digital single by the K-pop boy group NCT. It was released on December 4, 2020 as part of the NCT 2020 all-unit Resonance event.

    II. Background & Release

The group structure of NCT is unique among K-Pop groups due to the fact that the concept of NCT is an ever expanding group with "unlimited" members and it is comprised of several individual subunits. Currently there are 23 members in NCT, making up four individual sub-units.

Each of the sub-units releases albums, performances and TV shows, then the entire group unites on a regular basis for an all-unit event, such as NCT 2018 Empathy and NCT 2020 Resonance, supported by albums, concerts, special social content, TV or streaming shows and appearances.

As part of the NCT 2020 Resonance all-unit event, the group released a pair of albums, NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 1 and NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 2 in October and November of 2020. On each album, the group features songs from each of its sub-units.

The group then released an all-unit single "Resonance" in December during awards show season. Like the 2018 all-unit track "Black on Black," the song was designed as a performance piece with a strong dance emphasis. However, "Resonance" is a mash-up of four different songs on the Resonance albums: the three promoted singles "Make A Wish (Birthday Song)," "90s Love," "Work It" and the b-side "Raise the Roof."

The track was first teased at the end of the music video "Work It" from Resonance Pt. 2 on Nov. 27. It was teased again a day later at the end of NCT's performance at the AAA Awards. The first official teaser was released on Dec. 1 and the second the following day. The song was released on Dec. 4, ahead of its performance debut at the 2020 MAMA Awards on December 6 during a 35 minute performance that featured each unit performing separately, then combining to perform "Resonance."

The group continued to perform "Resonance" through other year-end shows, readjusting the choreography due to an injury to NCT 127 leader and center Taeyong.

The song was released digitally under the artist NCT 2020 and does not appear on either of the two Resonance albums.
