Bill Gates may no longer be the world’s richest man, but he can claim a new title: America’s farmland king.
The billionaire Microsoft co-founder has become the largest owner of farmland in the United States by quietly buying up massive plots across the county, a new report says.
Gates’ portfolio comprises about 242,000 acres of farmland and nearly 27,000 acres of other land across 19 states, according to The Land Report, a magazine for land investors that tracks the nation’s biggest landowners.
The biggest chunks of Gates’ holdings are in Louisiana and Arkansas, where he owns 69,071 acres and 47,927 acres, respectively, the outlet’s research found.
He also reportedly owns about 16,000 acres in his home state of Washington, including a 14,500-acre tract in the Horse Heaven Hills region that was purchased for nearly $171 million.
The land is owned both directly and indirectly by Cascade Investment, the Seattle-area firm that Gates — the world’s third-richest man with a net worth of $132 billion, according to Bloomberg — set up to manage his massive fortune, according to The Land Report.
A hint at Gates’ huge farm holdings emerged in a 2014 Wall Street Journal profile of Michael Larson, the money manager who serves as Cascade’s chief investment officer. The piece noted that the firm owns “at least 100,000 acres of farmland in California, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana and other states — or an area seven times bigger than Manhattan.”
It’s uncertain why Gates has invested in so much farmland or how his tracts are currently being used. Cascade did not immediately respond to a phone message Friday, and the company declined to comment to The Land Report “other than to say that Cascade is very supportive of sustainable farming,” the outlet said.

Agriculture is also a key focus area for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the massive charity run by Gates and his wife. The foundation aims to “support country-led inclusive agricultural transformation across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia,” according to its website.
While Gates is America’s biggest farmland owner, he’s far from being the nation’s largest landowner in general. That crown belongs to Liberty Media chairman John Malone, who has 2.2 million acres, according to The Land Report.

President Joe Biden is temporarily freezing weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, pledging to review a set of controversial arms deals former President Donald Trump struck with the two U.S. allies in the waning days of his administration.

This freeze will temporarily hold up at least two deals crafted by Trump in recent months to sell fighter jets and bombs to the UAE and Saudi Arabia respectively, the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg first reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.
The Biden administration plans on reviewing some of those deals, a State Department spokesperson told Forbes, a move it characterized as a routine action for a new administration.
At least one defense contractor expected a pause: Raytheon CEO Greg Hayes told investors Tuesday the company was preparing for Biden to halt an arms deal with an unnamed “customer in the Middle East” (Raytheon did not respond to Forbes when asked whether that customer is Saudi Arabia).

The UAE Embassy in Washington tweeted the country “anticipated a review” of Trump’s arms sale and said it will work with the Biden administration.
The White House did not respond to requests for comment, and the Saudi embassy could not be reached for comment.

The United States has facilitated dozens of weapons deals with Saudi Arabia in recent decades, but these agreements have earned scrutiny recently because of the country’s human rights record. Observers have warned Saudi Arabia is using U.S.-built weapons for airstrikes in Yemen, leading to civilian casualties in that country’s civil war and humanitarian crisis. Also, after Saudi Arabia earned bipartisan scorn for its alleged involvement in the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, Trump chose to stand by the country, arguing a halt in arms sales would damage the U.S.-Saudi alliance.
Two years ago, then-presidential candidate Biden vowed to stop assisting Saudi Arabia’s military intervention against Houthi rebel groups in Yemen.
Biden’s freeze on arms sales could also pause a massive deal to sell dozens of F-35 planes to the United Arab Emirates, an agreement negotiated last year in tandem with Trump’s push for the UAE to recognize Israel. Some critics worry the deal could spark an arms race in the Middle East, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly opposed to the sale because he worries it could undermine Israel’s military edge in the region.

Ella Emhoff, the 21-year-old stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris and daughter of Doug Emhoff, has signed with IMG Models.
Following the announcement that inaugural poet Amanda Gorman inked a deal with the same agency, IMG revealed that Emhoff will be also joining the ranks of Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss and many of the other top models in the industry.
“It’s not really about shape, size or gender any more,” Ivan Bart, the president of IMG Models, told the New York Times. “Ella communicates this moment in time. There’s a cheekiness and a joy she exudes.”
He added that when he saw Ella wearing a sparkling Miu Miu coat at the swearing-in of her stepmother and President Biden last week, he thought, “Wow, she’s communicating fashion.”
Emhoff has a clear affinity for clothing; she’s currently a senior at Parsons School of Design in New York, studying fine arts with a focus on textiles. She has also been modeling “on and off” for the past few years with a smaller agency, per the Times.
