the song is more niche. it's not as catchy and infectious as TOMBOY.

Because being a bigger group only helps with initial charting, than song quality has to take over.
If you're a big company and you properly push, promote and tease a song, yes many will tune in on day 1 to check it out, but after that? No the quality and user preference takes over.
FMR is currently only a bit behind TB so obviously people like that song too, but overall must prefer Tomboy.

Same reason next level overtook butter. The song clicked by luck. Sometimes you just get lucky.

If group popularity determined everything with charting, TWICE's latest releases wouldn't have ended up bombing on the charts.
Of course group popularity has some impact on song charting, but song catchiness and likeability across a wide audience has more.
That said, the songs of both groups are currently in the Top 3, so looks like both groups are doing something right since a lot of music listening people seem to like both songs.

Tomboy has instant appeal (excluding Soyeon's contributions).
Actually I might be going off Feel My Rhythm, at least I'm not in raptures over it anymore. I love the Bach sample but Sweetbox did it a lot better. Something about the song is kind of frantic, and the performance video wasn't pleasant to watch. It was so jerky and fast I had to check I didn't have it on 1.5 speed. I still like it, but I think the execution could have been a bit more balletic and polished.
