[Discussion] Live Singing is dead in KPOP

  • STAYC is a hard group to tell when they are singing live because as a SWITH I personally think some of their "lives" are prerecorded whereas others are 100% live, but STAYC's live vocals are so good it's hard to tell them apart lol ^^

So Bad was live for most of the members because some of the vocals were not fixed or autotuned at all. The imperfections were left as is. ASAP was lip sync for most or all of the members.

  • i don't see why idols have to sing live without the support of technology

people wear clothes, ride cars, use phones, or take pics

rather than get fatter for warmth, train to run faster, yell louder, or improve visual memory

autotune and other tech is no different

technology exists because it allows people to compensate for weaknesses

kpop performances now are more dynamic than before because autotune exists

people are free to listen to out of tune songs or watch weaker dance performances

but i prefer better entertainment with technology, rather than weaker ones without

(this seems like a duplicate thread, so a duplicate response)

  • I haven't watched this video and I'm not going to but i still want to comment on the topic of live singing in k-pop.

When we discuss here people usually say they prefer idols live singing. While that may be true individually it's not the general sentiment fans have so this won't change anytime soon. The dance choreo videos will have more views than videos where they are sitting and singing live. Companies won't care about things fans don't care about. Because of the lip synced videos, fans have unrealistic expectations from their faves and thus everyone else. I saw fans dragging good live performances while dancing as saying that the vocals were not stable and their og faves pulling these off were so great vocally(it was for a cover performance). Even the live vocals will real time have editing of some sorts on their mics. This is not me blaming anyone, but it is what it is and it is not restricted to kpop.

  • I am no expert in identifying what is and what is. And also mistrust people who claim to be experts. Given the state of technology, unless directly present and verified, any electronic transmission is suspect.

And as you mention, broadcasting itself is one layer, where they can play around.

But I use others things to speculate, in case of IU, there have been few instances where her voice cracked - Sketchbook, lyrics forgotten, missed high note timing (Love poem, Singapore in 2020) etc., over the years.

So she has been open about such stuff and also her songs mostly don't need much choreography that would need such gimmicks.

So based on that, I believe she sang live in GDA.

Since neither of us were there present personally to check her performance and equipment, we won't be able to prove/disprove each other.

    Well leave it at that.
