It isn’t the drag you think it is. Every artists wishes to have a big and loyal fandom. Insulting and dismissing an artists’ success due to that, to me sounds like jealousy.
It's a way of diminishing the time and effort the fans have put into helping raise the artist up. Again, jealousy. And I'd add insecurity

Yup looking down on fandoms and trying to act superior but more like “my faves don’t have a fandom, and I am insecure “
