In the West, it is an expectation. Some still do lip-sync if they are doing a lot on stage. I've been waiting for K-Pop groups to do more live, less backtracked singing a lot more often for a minute.
People would rather you sing live and suck than lip sync here.

Can someone give me an example of an at least semi-popular active group that legitimately never sings live? This seems to be a common topic that's brought up (aka a common drag people use to uplift their faves), but I have yet to see an actual example. I mean idols are literally trained for years to be able to sing live while dancing, and many don't make the cut for a reason. Any remotely reputable agency won't debut a group that is completely incapable of singing live.
