They are drawing parallels to the WW2 propaganda. Obviously China is just an East Asian version of the United States but they are still alleged enemies, so it makes sense that to prepare the people for an all out nuclear war with China they need to antagonize them the same way Japanese were antagonized before they were nuked. I'm sure 99.999% of the anti-Asian crimes are fully natural hatred and racism from the attackers, but behind the scenes the media follows orders from the government.
