Why is Taeyeon flopping?

Wrong or no direction since the solo debut 10 years ago.

They couldn't decide that she should be an idol or a traditional vocalist. In one way they used the usual idol promotion tactics: fandom name, fan sign, etc. In other way she didn't even participate in any other activities (acting, variety, etc) for at least 5 years.

The first years since debut time was the most important period to gauge public interest, but they failed it.

All of the things she achieved until now are from old fans / followers. But people all have things to do with their lives, no one can support anyone forever, they always need new audiences.

I think it's predominantly Taeyeon herself choosing it. Some of it is probably SM as you said but Taeyeon would easily sell out arenas in the main US cities (same as IU did) but I think she just isn't comfortable doing that level of a tour.
