Have Jpop becoming better to promote to the world than 15 years ago?

  • With the success of Produce Japan groups and big companies making localized groups such as JYP's NiziU, SM NCT-Tokyo and Avex's XG, do you feel Jpop now is very different than what it was for 15 years ago? Where it was 99% locked inside Japan.

  • When it comes to global promoting?

Not really, as far as I know.

Once upon a time, Jpop actually had more fans and interest than Kpop did in the west.

Lots of anime fans got into J-pop when anime really started to get large traction in the west. Often because J-pop singers sang the opening or closing for anime, which then made the singers better known as people started looking for other music by them etc.

They didn't capitalize on this much and I hear less about J-pop now than I did before.

Kpop, that already had more experience in growing abroad towards first (ironically) Japan and then South-East Asia, slowly started growing in the West from the 2000s on social media for people with geeky interests like Livejournal, then Tumblr in the early 2010s and then more widespread. A lot of the first group of people that started consuming it were people who already knew some Jpop and then tried out Kpop as well. Sometimes even because Kpop singers often sang in Japanese and that's how they got to know their Kpop singers.
