Do you think the current method of counting album sales is fair?

  • When there're different amount of versions defending on the groups? It's not about popularity anymore but how many versions do you sell.

I think Gaon/Hanteo/Circle should implement some rules like BB to filter inflated numbers.

    Any thoughts? :eyes:

    Approved the thread.
  • Album sales shouldnt be the main metric for popularity all together. It's all about streaming

Agree but when you have the awards and music shows still use album sales to give out trophies and awards like AOTY, you have to make it more fair for everyone.

  • It’s always been like this though. Repackages and version A, B etc have been things for ages.

  • It is fair cause it is a legit album sale.

There is desperation to inflate sales by putting out many versions but having very low streams and digitals.

    Kinda embarrassing.

  • There's no fairness in KPOP. Only business!

  • Tbh honest, and this isn't just about Aespa, cause even my faves are doing it too. I'm honestly just so sick of the inlfated album sales number because it's so deceptive. Most of these group's true sales are probably a half or even a third of what their gaon or hanteo number says. The other thing is thinking about the kind of harm these album sales are doing to the environment when they are bought like this.

I think if Gaon or Hanteo wants to establish true credibility they need to implement rules like Billboard or Oricon chart has to filter out these inflated sales which would hopefully cut down on these companies and fans doing all these crazy inflations.

Of course, it will never happen because Korean Government probably cares more about showing off their country's soft power rather than making regulations that would prevent all this waste of materials.

  • GAON should do digital points like system for album sales as well by alloting points dependent on price of the album and make it the most important system for albums like they did for songs with digital points system. Certifications should be given by filtering the bulkbuys like they do for streaming and download certifications. Then everything will be back to square one.

  • Kpop groups should only be allowed to do one version, no fansigns, no photocards in albums and no multiple copies. It's such a waste of albums. We live in the streaming era, let the streams show how popular these groups really are.

  • Album sales are album sales. Billboard doesn't count album sales, they have the BB200, an album chart. It's different.

  • A lot of businesses count on the production of those albums so I don't think it's happening anytime soon.

  • Have album passports so you can only buy 1 copy. Just download the album if you want to buy. It costs like 7 bucks for downloads so the labels are making money. And it's not clogging up your room or using up tons of plastic/paper. I've never opened up any of the albums I bought and they're just sitting on a shelf.

And I agree with some transparency. Make the labels divulge dealer pricing so these digipaks/jewel case versions pricing will be known. Some labels appear to care more about market share than actual profits.

  • Do you put this same energy into zombie streaming and steaming parties? People making multiple accounts to vote? These are all the same thing.

  • Album sales = revenues

Seriously, do you want to diminish album sales, just because some fandoms buy more albums than others, when it's albums that are being compared?

Might as well ban fanmeet lottery sales and handshake event sales and cheap single album sales too, because they're all 'unfair' to compare.
