I. Introduction:
EXILE is a Japanese dance and vocal group under the management of LDH JAPAN, and they are signed to the record label rhythm zone. Originally part of J Soul Brothers, EXILE now serves as the flagship group for LDH and the larger supergroup EXILE TRIBE. The group was established in 2001 with six members. Vocalist SASA had departed from J Soul Brothers, and HIRO, MATSU, ÜSA, and MAKIDAI were joined by vocalists ATSUSHI and SHUN. They officially debuted on September 27, 2001, with the single “Your eyes only Aimai na Boku no Katachi“.
As of June 2024, EXILE consists of 17 members, with 13 actively participating in group activities and 4 having retired.

II. History:
**Pre-debut**
In 1989, HIRO debuted as a member of the pop music group ZOO. By 1991, he had envisioned a vocal and dance unit called Japanese Soul Brothers, which included HIRO, BOBBY, KOJI, and LUKE. They participated in numerous dance contests and supported Bobby Brown's tours. When ZOO disbanded in 1995, HIRO continued with the unit. In 1997, DJ DARUMA, ÜSA, MATSU, MAKIDAI, and Ryuzy joined. By 1999, HIRO, alongside ÜSA, MATSU, MAKIDAI, and SASA, formed J Soul Brothers, releasing their first self-titled single on October 20, 1999.
In 2001, SASA left, and vocalists ATSUSHI and SHUN joined. On August 24, 2001, HIRO renamed the group to EXILE.
**2001-2006**
EXILE debuted on September 27, 2001, with the single "Your eyes only ~Aimai na Boku no Katachi~". In November 2003, they remade ZOO's hit "Choo Choo TRAIN," which promoted their third studio album, EXILE ENTERTAINMENT, selling over a million copies. Their 2004 single "real world" became their first number-one on Oricon charts. In July 2005, they released "Scream" with Japanese rock band GLAY, peaking at #1 and selling over 500,000 copies. The singles "Tada... Aitakute" and "YES!" also topped the Oricon charts.
SHUN left on March 29, 2006, and AKIRA joined on June 6. TAKAHIRO joined on September 22, 2006, after winning the EXILE VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION.
**2007-2013**
Their single "Michi," released on February 14, 2007, became their first number-one since TAKAHIRO joined. Their 2007 album, EXILE LOVE, was the highest-selling album of Japan in 2008. Their compilation album EXILE BALLAD BEST also saw immense success, with "Ti Amo" being certified Million for digital downloads. They won the Grand Prix Award at the 50th Japan Record Awards for "Ti Amo".
In 2009, EXILE's song "THE NEXT DOOR" was featured as the theme for the Japanese edition of Street Fighter IV. On March 1, 2009, EXILE and Nidaime J Soul Brothers merged into a 14-member group. Their first studio album as a merged group, Ai Subeki Mirai e, was released on December 2, 2009, winning the Grand Prix Award for "Someday" at the 51st Japan Record Awards. They continued their success with the song "I Wish For You" winning at the 52nd Japan Record Awards.
In 2011, they were the 3rd highest-grossing artist in Japan, and 2nd in 2012. They released their ninth album EXILE JAPAN / Solo on January 1, 2012, and their first sub-unit, THE SECOND from EXILE, was announced on July 1, 2012. HIRO retired as a performer in 2013 but remained as the group's leader and producer.
**2014-2016**
On April 27, 2014, winners of the EXILE PERFORMER BATTLE AUDITION were revealed, and their first single, "NEW HORIZON," was released on July 23, 2014. Their tenth studio album, 19 -Road to AMAZING WORLD-, was released on March 25, 2015. Members Matsumoto Toshio, ÜSA, and MAKIDAI announced their retirement in 2015, with their final performance on December 31, 2015. ATSUSHI moved his base of activities to the United States in 2016, and the group released the best album EXTREME BEST on September 27, 2016, celebrating their 15th anniversary.
**2018**
On January 1, LDH announced EXILE's comeback with a new album and Dome tour titled EXILE LIVE TOUR 2018 "STAR OF WISH". They released six digital singles as part of the EXILE FRIDAY special, culminating in the album STAR OF WISH on July 25. The dome tour EXILE LIVE TOUR 2018-2019 "STAR OF WISH" ran from September 15 to February 11, 2019.
**2019**
On January 3, they released the digital single "Love of History".
**2020**
On January 1, EXILE released their 49th single "Ai no Tame ni ~for love, for a child~". The EXILE PERFECT LIVE 2001▶︎2020 dome tour followed. ATSUSHI retired as a vocalist on November 2 but remained part of the group. On December 16, they released their 50th single "SUNSHINE".
**2021: 20th Anniversary**
On February 27, they announced monthly content reveals leading up to their debut anniversary on September 27. They released their 51st single "PARADOX" on April 27, followed by "One Nation" on May 27, and "HAVANA LOVE" on July 1. They celebrated their 20th anniversary on September 27 with special MUSIC & MOVIE CARDs, TV specials, and a fan meeting at Izakaya EXILE in Yokohama.
**2022**
On January 1, they released their 12th studio album PHOENIX. The EXILE 20th ANNIVERSARY EXILE LIVE TOUR 2021 "RED PHOENIX" ran from February 26 to May 26. On May 27, they released the digital single "BE THE ONE". Member Kuroki Keiji announced his departure from the group and the entertainment world by October 2022. On July 1, they released "POWER OF WISH" with ATSUSHI. The dome tour EXILE LIVE TOUR 2022 "POWER OF WISH" ran from July 6 to September 25. Kuroki Keiji retired on October 31. On December 7, they released their 13th studio album POWER OF WISH, followed by the EXILE LIVE TOUR 2022 "POWER OF WISH" ~Christmas Special~ in December. ATSUSHI announced his return as a vocalist on December 21.
**2023**
On April 26, they released "Reason" as a digital single, used as a support song for the G7 Hiroshima Summit 2023. On July 22, members performed at the 2023 SUPER SLIPPA 12 in Taipei. On November 29, they released footage of the EXILE LIVE TOUR 2022 "POWER OF WISH" ~Christmas Special~.
**2024**
On April 30, it was announced that Sekiguchi Mandy would graduate from the group and depart from LDH JAPAN on June 25, 2024.
