II. Background

The project group Girls On Top was announced on December 26, 2021 and social media accounts were opened for them.

It was revealed the group would not have a set lineup for every comeback. Their debut lineup is known as GOT the beat, and it features Hyoyeon and Taeyeon of Girls' Generation, Wendy and Seulgi of Red Velvet, BoA, and Winter and Karina of aespa. They were revealed to be performing at the SMTOWN LIVE 2022 SMCU EXPRESS @ KWANGYA livestream on January 1 and their single would come out on January 3.

Teaser photos and a teaser clip of the group were released. The group performed their single song Step Back for the first time at SMTOWN LIVE 2022 SMCU EXPRESS @ KWANGYA on January 1, and the single was subsquently released to various digital streaming platforms on the 3.
