The Lonely Master Chef Xiao


  • I. Introduction

    The Lonely Master Chef Xiao was an ongoing YouTube cooking show featuring WayV member Xiaojun.



    II. Overview

    The group structure of NCT is unique among K-Pop groups due to the fact that the concept of NCT is an ever expanding group with "unlimited" members and it is comprised of several individual subunits. WayV is one of the sub-units and has its own WayV-ariety umbrella for an assortment of videos on YouTube, including ongoing series hosted by a member. Special episodes of WayV-ariety content also appear in support of the all-unit NCT 2020 Resonance event.


    WayV-ariety originally added member-hosted regular shows during promotions for its first full album, Awaken the World, in May 2020. The Lonely Master Chef Xiao was the third member-hosted series, inspired by two previous NCT social media videos where WayV member Xiaojun made unexpected dishes out of existing products.


    In each episode of the series, Xiaojun creates simple recipes in a silent and theatrical style that spoofs other cooking shows.


    Unlike the Master Moon Chef series or Kun’s cooking videos for the WayV blogs, these are not full recipes, but typically utilize premade ingredients to create new dishes, such as an Oreo “cake” made from milk and crushed Oreos and microwaved.


    The first two episodes referenced recipes from other popular videos, including the Oreo Cake from Xiaojun’s segment in the NCT 24 Hour Relay Cam series and the Guangdong Taco from the WayV-log series, which was ramen placed in a potato chip and eaten like a taco.


    Later episodes also incorporated more cooking elements.


    In July 2022, all of this content moved under the new WayV Presents umbrella and new episodes of shows did not have the WayV-ariety name.

    III. Trivia

    - The Guangdong Taco appears in a WayV-log “Master Chef Xiao’s Late Night Restaurant” with group mates Lucas and Hendery during “Turn Back Time” promotions in July 2020.
