I agree, I think there's a lot of 'ow poor me' going on from their fans too. Like HYBE is probably the biggest entertainment company in Korea right now and everyone of their acts is selling a huge amount and have pretty good streaming numbers too. I think if Gfriend had a bigger more active fanbase where they could sell 400 thousand copies and realistically do tours again HYBE may have kept them on.
But it's pretty evident they held almost 0 value as a group. Even Viviz are doing pretty dismal right now so releasing GF was the right move on HYBE/Source's end.
Allkpop and punching down on Gfriend, name a more iconic duo

None of you in this thread know anything about the real reasons for the disbandments, and y’all are just speculating wildly.
Also, album sales are not the only way kpop groups make profit, and just because is “in debt” in their books, does not mean that they are “losing money”.

Well I suppose if your bar for nugu is that high, you're right. But most people would not call a group like Brave Girls, Apink, or GFriend nugu because they have general public recognition. I don't think fandom size is the be all end all metric for "nugu"-ness.

GFriend sales weren't good itself

Case in point - Viviz and NMIXX both debuted recently. NMIXX has over 200k sales, Viviz has about 40k. Yet Bop Bop charted (marginally) better than O.O (though neither charted exceptionally well). It's pretty hard to call either of these two groups nugu though.
Physical sales tend to be stronger for groups with strong fandom support, but just because a group does not have the strongest fandom support, does not always mean they are nugu (ex. Brave Girls).

I don't know why OP is using NMIXX as an example as if they didn't come from a big 3
