company can push a member & it will give a lot of opportunities and exposure to the member, in the end the most popular member will come out naturally imo. so, i think, in the end it's the gp that picks. sometimes it's the one the company wanted (they often know who has a lot of appeal) and sometimes it's another member that will challenge the pushed member... (again, companys push does A LOT & can influence gp tho)
exo: baekhyun is the one the company pushed & he's the most popular member (i assume)
bp: jennie is the most pushed member & while she is the most popular in korea, it's lisa globally
bts: i wouldn't say jk is the most pushed (bc bts barely has solo activities), but with the rest of the ml he's the most popular
aespa: karina was the one the company pushed & while she is very popular, winter seems to be gp's pick & rising to #1 in popularity

I remember stanning exo back then, wasn't Kai the most pushed one? He had stages and more center parts. And even though baekhyun had more lines, him and Chen were pushed to side.
And in bts obviously jk is gets the most spotlight but V is popular among non fans.
And you're right about others.

Some companies like SM highlight different members over time, in order to have multiple members rise in popularity and to utilise the different strengths of members in a group.
Some other companies ride the wave of popularity, like Banana Culture did with Hani.
While others have a pretty good idea which member will appeal to Koreans most and give that one an extra push, sometimes even before debut, like YG with Jennie.
