Because China used to used lunar calendar. Actually, the Chinese still sticks to its lunar calendar when it comes to traditional events, new year, qingming (the day peoples visit their ancestors' tombs) etc.
China is not the sole country with double new year days, few countries in SEA celebrate songkran which is the ancient new year. (Songkran may be known to foreign tourists to Thailand as water festival.) At one point, Thailand even had as many as 3 new years.
- The new year accordingly to Tai ancient lunar calendar. (Tai lunar calendar was slightly different from Chinese lunar calendar.)
- Songkran, the new year accordingly to Indian solar calendar, 14th April.
- universal new year, 1st January.
