  • Why is this in an non? They follow the lunar calendar

  • because its based on Chinese lunar calendar vs the more common solar

  • Because China used to used lunar calendar. Actually, the Chinese still sticks to its lunar calendar when it comes to traditional events, new year, qingming (the day peoples visit their ancestors' tombs) etc.

China is not the sole country with double new year days, few countries in SEA celebrate songkran which is the ancient new year. (Songkran may be known to foreign tourists to Thailand as water festival.) At one point, Thailand even had as many as 3 new years.

    - The new year accordingly to Tai ancient lunar calendar. (Tai lunar calendar was slightly different from Chinese lunar calendar.)

    - Songkran, the new year accordingly to Indian solar calendar, 14th April.

    - universal new year, 1st January.

  • Not just an east asian, or sea thing, also south asia too.

  • Most other cultures have their own New Years. What do people teach kids these days at school that they don’t know this bare minimum….kind of sad.

  • because different cultures use different calendars. Even my country (philippines) celebrate the lunar new year even though we follow the gregorian calendar.

  • This question is so ethnocentric.

  • Many countries have their own new year
