One could argue that it looks like they brought it back just for BTS originally. It was discontinued from 2008 - 2018, and BTS won 2019 and 2020. I'm guessing they didn't see the results they wanted to see out of it -- probably a fan fight/lots of buzz, since it was brought back as a social media category -- hence canceling it.
This is my take too. It was definitely added back to get some clout with K-Pop fans who are basically the only people who make the VMAs trend.
After Destiny's Child/Backstreet Boys/NSYNC went their separate way it basically turned into a "Best Band" category and it was redundant to the Best Rock category. If they're not gonna bring back the male/female solo awards then it's best to let the group award go away again too.
