As we're getting to the end of the year. I think it's time to start making top 10 lists.
This list is my 10 favourite artists from the underground hip-hop and digicore scenes in Seoul, (digicore being a type of Hip-Hop that uses chopped-up/blown-out beats and mixes in elements of EDM and hyperpop - listen to a few songs in this list and you will get the idea).
I set the following rules:
- No repeat artists (although repeat producers is okay)
- Each song must have a music video
If you find a new song you like, let me know!
If there's an artist you think I should know about, also let me know!
If you're listening to these songs for the first time, I suggest starting with number 1 and working up.
10. Molly Yam - LADY 9A9A
This song samples Lady Gaga's Just Dance but makes it sound really fresh when the beat kicks in. Molly Yam has released loads of great tracks this year (and 2 full length albums). Bro needs to lay off the cigarettes though. Sometimes I feel like I am going to get lung cancer just watching his videos.
9. Collie Wave - G-therapy!
Collie Wave is fast becoming one of my favs. Shout-out to her incredible collab with Japanese digicore artist e5 on the track Kantan (go check that one out if you want to hear the Japanese side of the scene).
8. Jvcki Wai x vangdale - Wreck Car
First of 2 vangdale productions on this list. Jvcki Wai reinvented herself with the Mollak album. It is amazing. This is my fav track from it.
7. Uarenotsane - Uarenotsane
A very underground artist with only a handful of songs to her name, but I love this one so much.
6. kimj x Extra Small - KOREA
Kimj is the architect of Effie's sound, as well as many others. He is also unashamedly a Skrillex fanboy as you'll be able to tell from this song when it locks into full dubstep mode.
Absolute banger from the very talented Kimmy Gone (she produces all her own music).
Basically Korea's answer to peterparker69. He reinvented his sound for his latest album, and while I don't like all of it, the stand-outs (like this one) are sooooo good.
3. Wondior x vangdale - From Korea
Wondior is a super prolific rapper, he and vangdale have released 3 full lengths together this year, with tons of great tracks. I wish I was half as cool as him lol.
2. Effie - MORE HYPER
The song that started my obsession with this scene. Really a life changing song for me!
1. System Seoul - SS
I thought Effie was going to be number 1, but as the year plays out, I just can't stop listening to System Seoul. Their 2 full-lengths SS-Pop and SS-Pop 2, are both classics (or will be someday). I'm obsessed with them, and hope I get to see them live soon.
I also turned this into a Spotify playlist:
