Magic! The Gathering could do a Kpop set?

  • It's been a slippery slope over the past 5 years (starting with the Walking Dead secret lair, but really accelerating after Lord of the Rings).

They've been eroding their own IP too with something the community calls "hat sets", for example they did a "wacky races" style set recently where all the planeswalkers were driving cars/motorbikes, setting up massive highways and leaving skid marks (in both senses) all over the beloved planes of the past - filled with cheap pop culture references like this

I havent' played MtG in ages but I ahve to say, the newest set, Edge of Eternities, looks soooo cool.

  • Like I said...ever since Hasbro bought WoTC, they've been churning out collab sets...Clue, Child's Play (Chucky), Spongebob, Monty Python, Ghostbusters...pretty much any IP they can get.

SpongeBob? I mean these kid-friendly IPs make sense from Hasbro's perspective, with them being a toy company and all, but I'm sure the game's older players are preemptively rolling over in their graves. I can hardly think of a bigger clash in tone.

Yeah, it's finally a set that takes itself seriously (which was also had with Takir Dragonstorm recently) - I am eyeing up the new angel cards for my angels commander deck! I recently moved back to South Korea though, and haven't found anyone to play magic with just yet.

There's a fun in-joke that this comic (created back in 2020 when the Walking Dead crossover first came out) is slowly becoming true.

Keep in mind many of these "sets" like Spongebob are "secret Lairs". 5 or so card "sets" that are actually just pre-existing cards with themed artwork and/or a rename (but also act as the original card as well, aka "skinned cards"). Most aren't full, or legal, sets. More just a collectible, usually with a very limited run. Not always licensed, other Secret Lairs can just be a particular artist, or theme.

This is the whole Spongebob Set

The Godzilla name is just flavour. Rules wise it is Titanoth Rex
