A man in his 20s has been fined for unlawfully entering the dorm of K-pop group NewJeans and stealing items.
According to legal sources on the 23rd, the Seoul Western District Court’s Criminal Division 9 sentenced the man, referred to as A, to a fine of 10 million won (7.6K USD) for charges of unlawful entry and theft. Prosecutors had previously requested a 10-month prison sentence.
The court explained its sentencing by saying, “The location of the crime was a dormitory no longer occupied by the celebrities, so the likelihood of direct infringement on their privacy was relatively low.” It added, “A admitted to the crime during the investigation, showed remorse, and had no prior criminal record.”
At the final hearing held last month on the 11th, A appeared in court and admitted to all charges. In his final statement, he pleaded for leniency, saying, “Please give me a chance to fulfill my dream of becoming a public servant. I will live responsibly while taking care of my ailing mother.”
A was accused of breaking into NewJeans’ former dorm in Yongsan District, Seoul, twice in December last year and stealing various items. The incident occurred after NewJeans had vacated the residence following their contract termination announcement with ADOR in November.
During the unauthorized entries, A reportedly stole miscellaneous items such as hangers and banners left behind in the dorm.
Back in August of last year, a controversial post surfaced on several online communities that included the dorm’s name and number of rooms, along with a threat of attack. However, it has not been confirmed whether Mr. A was responsible for that post.
